A NOTE FROM PASTOR ROBERT LORMIS
A Crisis or A Curse
There are so many things taking place in
our world today that it’s hard to keep up with it all. Every day is a new
problem and cure. There are so many voices that are declaring one thing
or another that it is hard to get a grip on what to believe and what is
just a lot of hype. Even in the church there are so many different
voices; one declaring peace and blessing, others crying it is the end of
time. How do we make sense of it all, and get a clear picture of the
times we live in?
First, the word crisis is defined as ‘a point of turning,
for better or worse; a time of radical changes or decision.’
Second, the word curse is
defined as ‘to cause great harm or misfortune; to torment, as in response
to imprecation or as retribution.’
There is no
doubt that that we are at place of change. The election of 2008 has told
us that we want change in the USA. It seems that we are going to get
change even if not by choice. There is an old adage that for every action
there is a reaction; what we have been doing in the past has now caught up
with us to the point that we are in a crisis in this nation today. The
greed and excesses of yesterday is now taking its toll on us today.
Warning: This part you might want to skip as it will be hard-hitting.
One of the factors that led us up to this
point has been the church, the ministry and the believers. Sin has always
been the cystic for decline to a crisis and curse. The church at large
has been under the influence of the same greed and excess of the world.
We had our own problems. Sin has reigned from the pulpit to the pew. We
are in a crisis - even in the church. It’s time for a radical change. We
are in need of fire from the Holy Ghost in the pulpit as well as in the
pew.
About a
year and half ago I was on my way to church when I heard the voice of the
Lord tell me there was too much sin in the church. I had known there was
some sin going on in the midst of our congregation, but was just praying
about it. That Sunday morning when I arrived at the church, one of the
board members approached me with the same message. I knew what I had to
do but also knew that it was going to cost us all. I wept and cried for
days knowing that the action I had to take was going to decrease our
numbers greatly. We were in a time of crisis but I knew if not dealt
with, our church would fall under the curse of sin. Sometimes the remedy
is so hard and it hurts so much. Why can’t we just let things be? God in
His great mercy brings us to places of crisis to keep us from going on to
the curse.
America has
been a nation that fed and the clothed the nations of the world. We have
given of our substance. United States churches have sent missionaries
worldwide. But in spite of the good we have done, we have been a nation
that has declined in our own moral values ever so fast. What was once
evil has now become the ‘norm’. Over the last several years we have seen
an onslaught of destruction on the home and family values. Our government
has been no better with the passing of laws that undermine God’s moral
laws.
Yes, I do
believe that we are in time of great crisis, not only in our country and
around the world, and also the church at large. It is a time for a radical
change but we need to be very careful about the direction that we take.
Many times in the Old Testament, the nation of Israel found itself in
a crisis because they had drifted away from following God’s laws.
However, when they listened to their God-given prophets and ministers, God
spared them from the curses. We are at a crossroads in this nation in
which the steps we are taking today will determine if we are going from
the crisis to the curse.
We have
been a blessed nation but our sin is cutting us off from the blessings of
God and allowing the curse to come. We can sit by and watch it come or we
can realize there is a cure. We can make a difference! Evil triumphs
when good men do nothing. Passivity leads to sin. Sin leads to crisis. Crisis leads to curse. Curse leads to slavery. Godly standards and
morals are the guideposts from whence we know if we are heading into a
crisis.
The Cure
The Scripture reference 2 Chronicles 7:14
(KJV) says that “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways;
them will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal
their land.”
Deuteronomy 28 tells us of the blessings
that will come if we will observe and do all of God’s commandments. It
also tells us of curses that will come if we are disobedient. I don’t
want the curses of God on this nation; I don’t want them on your life or
mine.
Isaiah 58:1(KJV) says, “Cry aloud; spare
not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet and shew my people their
transgression and the house of Jacob their sin.”
Ezekiel 3:18-19 (KJV) says “When I say
unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning,
nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, To save his life; the
same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at
thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked and he turn not from his
wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but
thou hast delivered thy soul.”
Isaiah told
us to rise and shine for our light is come. It's time to move into what we
have been called to do. Declare the goodness of God to all people
everywhere. It’s not a time to fear. If you trust God, you have
promises. Walk in them. Let the Lion of the Tribe of Judah loose in you
life and you will make a difference. Whatever you are full of you will
declare.
God Bless,
Pastor Robert Lormis
